New Louisiana Sports Betting Bill to Seek Voter Approval by Parish
Louisiana state senate Danny Martiny has filed a new sports betting bill in anticipation of the state’s next legislative session, which will see people vote on the bill on a parish-by-parish. This is the same way in which the state’s daily fantasy sports bill was passed last year. Should the bill be enacted, the state’s registered gaming providers will be able to begin applying for sports betting licenses for January 1, 2020.
Louisiana’s Second Proposed Sports Betting Bill
This is the second time Martiny has attempted to legalize sports betting. His\ first attempt came in 2018 and left the senate rather annoyed with legislature and their overall treatment of the bill. The senate later commented on the situation saying that the state is devoid of funds and that legalizing sports betting industry would be one way to bring in some income from taxes. Since then, several neighboring states, such as Mississippi and Arkansas, have made significant movements towards legalizing both casino gaming and sports betting. This may perhaps give credence to Martiny’s belief that Louisiana is lagging behind on the trend.
Daily Fantasy Sports Testing the Waters for Sports Betting
Many analysts believe that there is a good chance that a sports betting bill will pass this year due to the bill on daily fantasy sports (DFS) having passed last year. Although the state still needs to draw up a framework for DFS, the fact that the bill has been approved is a sign that future gambling related bills may be coming in future.
It has been suggested that the sports betting industry in Louisiana will be worth around $288 million. However, it is unclear how much of this would be tax revenue.
