Splitting in Blackjack

Splitting in BlackjackYou can split in the game of Blackjack when the cards that you are holding match each other. You can also sometimes split when the cards have equal value. Some casinos permit you to split any two face cards even if these two face cards do not match each other (i.e. two Queens just of a different suit). It is important to verbally inform the casino dealer that you are splitting or want to split. The casino dealer will then ask you to place your identical bet next to the original bet that you wagered and then the cards will then be separated from each other in order for two hands to be formed. The casino dealer will also put the respective bets next to the particular hand that they go to. Essentially, splitting is doubling the current bet and now having two separate hands to play blackjack for real money against the casino dealer.

How to Split Cards in Blackjack

Each of the hands will then have one card and one bet. For the most part, you can double down following a splitting of the cards. There are some exceptions to this rule, though. If you are seeking to split aces, the majority of casinos will only deal you an additional card for each respective hand and not let you hit or split or double down for that matter regardless of what cards that are dealt. Some casinos, both online and off do not let you split again after you have already split. As in doubling down, Blackjack splitting is often misused and frequently misunderstood even by expert Blackjack players. It is important to know the guidelines to follow for splitting. They are: always split aces and 8s, never splits 10s, never split 5s, always split 2s or 3s but only when the dealer has a 4, a 5, a 6 or a 7; always split 6s when the dealer is showing a 3, a 4, a 5, or a 6; always split 7s when the dealer shows a 2, a 3, a 4, a 5, a 6, or a 7 and always split 9s when the dealer is showing any number between 2-9 but not a 7.

A fundamental rule of splitting is to never split 10s. Why? When you have two 10s, this is considered prime in blackjack for real money and there is always a guaranteed win. In most cases, you can be darn sure you will win about 83% of the time that happens, and that is very good odds – 5/6 to be exact. Splitting tens is considered to be a foolish move in either online or land-based Blackjack.

Some online casinos allow you to split after an initial one. All casinos in Las Vegas do, but not the ones in Atlantic City. Re splitting in either land or casino sites can be quite powerful in that you are able to maximize your play effectively. It can be quite potent particularly in cases where you can double following an initial split and where you can have a surrender. Splitting again or re-splitting permits you to get the max amount of money in play against the casino dealer.
