Texas Holdem Rules – How to Play Texas Hold ’em

The aim of Texas Hold’em poker game is for players to try and make the best hand according to the current poker rankings. The difference between Hold’em and other real money poker games is the way players construct their hands.

Players are dealt two hole cards. Hole cards are cards that are dealt face down. In the subsequent rounds, the cards are dealt face up and referred to as community cards. The community cards are used by all players to make their best five-card poker hand. Primarily the poker hand will consist of the two hole cards and three community cards or one-hole card and four community cards. Players can also have a hand that only consists of community cards. The community cards are dealt in three stages: The Flop, The Turn and the River.

If all but one player folds then that player wins without having to show any cards. If two or more players are remaining after the showdown and the last community has been dealt the pot will go to the best-ranking hand.

Winning Texas Holdem Hands

There are several winning hands in Texas Hold ’em. The basic combinations used in most US casinos are:

  • Royal Flush: is the best hand in hold’em. Same ensemble Ace, 10, Jack, Queen and King.
  • Straight Flush: A sequence of 5 cards that are of the same ensemble.
  • Four of a kind: Four cards of equal worth.
  • Full house: three identical value cards and a pair.
  • Flush: Five cards of the matching suit that are not in chronological order.
  • Straight: Five cards that are in sequence but not of the suit.
  • Three of a Kind: a hand that has three same value cards.
  • Two Pair: A hand that has two pairs.
  • One Pair: a hand that has one pair.

The Button

Texas Holdem games start to the dealer left and move clockwise around the table. The button is the rotating dealer meaning the player acts as the dealer for one hand and will then pass the role of dealer onto the dealer on their left to complete the hand. In land-based casinos and live casino rooms, there is a professional dealer at each table. The button also dictates which players have to post the small and big blinds

Blinds

With every new hand, two players have to place small and big blinds. Blinds are obligatory bets that open up the wagering. The player who is on the dealer’s immediate left has to place the small blind. The player on the direct left of the small blind has to place the big blind. The big blind is usually twice the size of the small blind

Betting Round: Pre-Flop

Pre-Flop is the first round of betting. The round starts after the player have been dealt with their two-hole cards. The player sitting on the left of the big blind will be the first to play. The player has a choice to raise (increase the bet within the game limits), call (match the big blind), or fold (toss the hand)

Betting Round: Flop

After the preflop, three community cards will be dealt face up. A second betting round will follow with the players who have not folded. The flop is started by the active player left of the button. The check option is added. To check is to pass the action to the next player.

Betting Round: Turn

The turn is the fourth community card. The card is dealt face-up, and betting starts once that has been completed.

Betting Round: River

Another betting round occurs after the fifth community (the River) has been dealt with. The remaining players from this hand go into the showdown

Showdown

The remaining players will show their hole cards, and the winner will be determined with assistance from the dealer. The winner will have the best combination according to the poker hand rankings.

Hold ’em Limits

Texas Hold ’em has several variations. The most common differences found in US casinos are Limit, No Limit, Pot-limit and Mixed Texas Hold ’em. The rules are the same across all the variations with each game having its unique expectations. The significant difference is the betting structure.
