Roulette Lessons for American Players

Lesson 1: Roulette History

They say you need to know the past to understand the present and to predict the future. Hence our first lesson on roulette history. It’s believed that a mathematician by name of Blaise Pascal invented roulette in the 17th century. The game was later adopted by Louise and Francois Blanc in the 19th century. Together they revised the game and added the dreaded zero pocket feature which gave casinos their house edge.

Online roulette only became available in the 1990s followed by the invention of computers. Initially, online roulette gamblers only had access to the European and American versions of the game.

Lesson 2: Roulette Rules

The rules of the game are straight forward. The objects or tokens of play are called ‘chips’ which are used to place bets. These chips have no initial numerical value and come in a range of different colours. When the game starts all players at the roulette table are assigned a different colour chip, and they decide the value of their chips when they place bets. The minimum bet value at most casinos is $1. So, for example, if Player X exchanges $100 for chips, the minimum value of each chip would be $1. So, if 10 chips are wagered, the overall value of that bet would amount to $10.

Lesson 3: Roulette Strategy

The third roulette lesson involves strategy. Now, although roulette is a game based purely on chance, not skill, many players still believe in strategy and the prospects it holds for winning. There are various strategies available, such as the Martingale and Paroli systems. However, it is important to remember that the house will always have better odds than you at winning and although many have banked large sums of money from roulette, the number of losers outweighs the number of winners, making the casino the biggest beneficiary in most cases.
