There was a law that considered any gambling form as a misdemeanor that could see players get up to six months in jail. “Professional gambling” was also considered a felony that carried a three-year imprisonment punishment accompanied by a $3,000 fine.

Gambling in Wyoming was outlawed in 1800 following an uprising in the state. There was, however, a push to have gambling legalized in 1930 with not much success.

Gambling in the 1900s

The passing of the Indian Gaming regulation saw Wyoming go up against one of its tribes in the hope of allowing gambling in the state.

Gambling in the 2000s.

Wyoming gambling only really made its mark in the 21st century. In 2005, the Northern Arapaho Tribe finally won its case and were awarded the right to offer Class 3 casino games. Horse racing was also stretched to provide both betting and simulcast betting for past races. Lawmakers also gave charity gambling the go-ahead.

Wyoming does not have a state gambling commission in place. As it stands, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act regulates the tribal casinos. Gambling in the state currently falls under the Pari-Mutual Commission. The commission only regulates the state’s horse racing industry. There are seven Commissioners in seven Wyoming districts which include Cheyenne, Baggs, Wapiti, Jackson, Buffalo, Lander, and Sundance.
