How to Play Razz Poker

Players will each be dealt with two face-down cards (hole cards) and the third card will be face up (door card). This first deal is known as the third street. From the third street, each deal will be subsequently be known as a street.

  • After the first three cards, the player will decide whether or not to continue with their in hand.
  • Players who do not fold before the seventh street will have to create the lowest five-card hand.
  • The best possible hand, in this case, is the wheel (5,4,3,2, A). The top five best hands are:
  • 5, 4, 3, 2, A
  • 6, 4, 3, 2, A
  • 6, 5, 4, 3, 2
  • 9, 7, 6, 5, A
  • 9, 7, 6, 5, 3

The player with the best Razz hand starts the action on the betting round. The player can bet an amount comparable to the small bet.

  • After the betting round, the fifth street will be dealt and again the player with the lowest hand will bet first. The sixth street is identical to the fifth.
  • In the seventh street, players will receive their seventh card dealt face down, and the betting order is the same as the fifth and sixth street. The seventh street is also known as the river.

Razz Poker Rules& Starting Hands

Important Razz rules to remember is that straights and flushes don’t count, Aces are seen as low, there is no eight-or-better rule, and if all players fold leaving one player that player wins. Door cards hold their face value.

Before the Razz poker game begins, players ante a minimal amount depending on the poker room. Then, the betting starts in the fourth street. After the seventh street, there is another betting round. Should there be more than one player remaining, the game goes into a shutdown.

In the shutdown, the player with the lowest hand wins the pot. There is no qualifier hand. Therefore, if there is more than one hand that has the same value, the pot is split among them.

Betting Tips for Razz

  • Good starting hands: 6-low hands are good hands.
  • Blinds and Antes? Steal! On the other hand, if you have a lower card showing than your opponents, raise.
  • Be mindful of the cards that are showing on the table and have folded. You are less likely to hit if the card you need to complete your low is already out on the table.
  • Fifth street stop. By the fifth street, you know where you stand. Regardless of your starting hand if you hit a high card, it is best to fold.
  • Chances that you will come across aggressive players is high. Don’t be tempted. Focus on creating and betting on your strong hands in hopes that your best hand will take advantage.
