American Roulette Online Real Money

American roulette wheel

American roulette differs from the European and French variations of the game. Therefore, to win at roulette, it is advised to familiarise yourself with the American roulette wheel as best as you can. The roulette bets, odds, and payouts also differ slightly in this version.

Spoiler alert, this version of the game comes less recommended because the odds of winning an American roulette game are made slimmer. We explain why later. This also bears significant changes to the house edge found in the game.

In this article, you can expect to find a list of reputable casinos where you can play online roulette for real money, as well as many other table games that players enjoy.

American Roulette Wheel

This online roulette wheel differs slightly from its counterparts. For starters, here the numbers are placed vertically whereas in French and European roulette the numbers are placed horizontally. The American roulette wheel also has an extra pocket to accommodate the double zero roulette wheel layout which is unique to this variation of the game.

The added double zero brings the number of pockets on an American roulette wheel to 38 overall. These added features lead to differences in the house edge and possibly how players will place bets as well as the probable outcome of each bet. However, although the house edge increases, the payout ratios remain unchanged.

American Roulette Table Layout

Roulette is played on a rectangular table with various sections imprinted on it. These sections represent the different betting options. Majority of the table is covered in numbers from 1-38 with the two double zero pockets included.

The numbers are separated into three columns with the single and double zero pockets seen at the head of the table. Three sections of the table are marked off for column bets and two other columns for odd and even bets. All numbers on the table are either red or black while the zeros are printed in green.

Unlike other variations of roulette, the American roulette table uses different chips, so before playing, players need to exchange their regular chips with the dealer. Each player receives a different color chip to avoid confusion.

Game Rules

The rules of roulette are very straight forward so there’s really nothing to stress about. And, what makes the game even simpler to play is the fact that the rules stay more or less the same with each variation.

French roulette comes with an additional la partage and en prison rule. This is perhaps the most significant difference between the three versions. The basic rules of the American version are as follows:

  • Before the game officially begins, all players need to place their bets. There are various different bets that you can make in this game and each has Its own payout ratio.
  • The dealer will then launch the roulette ball onto the spinning wheel and wait for it to come to a standstill.
  • If the ball rests on the number, color, or group of numbers that you selected with whatever bet you made, you win and will receive the equivalent payout.
  • If the ball lands on either of the number zero pockets then all players lose their bets. You also lose your bet if you don’t win a particular round.

Bets, Odds and American Roulette Payouts

This brings us to the other aspects of the game- roulette bets, odds and payouts. Like I’ve mentioned previously because the American roulette wheel layout is different, various other things are affected such as the odds of winning and the house edge.

The different types of bets found in roulette are pretty standard, with the exception of one found only in American roulette. We’ll discuss this type first.

A top line or basket bet is found only in this version and covers numbers 0, 00, 1,2 and 3. It also presents the worse odds of winning due to its low payout of 6:1 and a high house edge of 7,89%. All other bets in American roulette have a 5,26% house edge. See why it is considered the worst?

Below we’ve summarised all other types of bets in American roulette, as well as the respective payouts and odds associated with each.

American Roulette Strategies

American roulette is not the popular choice, and evidently so. However, for those brave enough, I’ve listed a few tips below to help you make the most of your casino experience and hopefully bag some money.

  • This one is basic – memorize the rules to avoid getting stuck while trying to remember which American roulette rule applies where.
  • Know your bets and the odds they carry. This gives you a better sense of what to expect.
  • Stay away from outside bets. It is increasingly difficult to beat roulette using outside bets.
  • Lastly, keep track of your bankroll to avoid losing all your earnings.
